マスメディアは学校教育制度と並んで、『みんながこうしているから、あなたもこうしたほうが良いのではないか？』という同調圧力を活用した『画一性・均質性の高い国民育成』に相当に大きな役割を果たしてきたが、マスメディアの衰退・倒産が進んでくると『国民全員に共通する社会状況の認識・世間的な価値判断』は今よりも弱まっていくだろう。

その事には、国民の精神的自由や状況判断（情報選択）の幅が増えるという好ましい側面もあるが、国民相互の共通了解事項や基本認識が減ってコミュニケーション・コストが大きくなる好ましくない側面もあるかもしれない。
